Welcome to Auckland!

Hungry and tired I sat down in the bus that would take me to Auckland. My mood got only better as soon I noticed it was raining like I was still in the Netherlands, gotta love it. Luckily the hostel was easily found and after some hours of trying to stay awake on a couch and having lunch I could enter my room.
The hostel is just exactly as you would’ve expected it to be. Worn couches, unstable bunk beds, pans which are even more unstable than the bunk beds because of all the dents but I’m not bothered by it. To top it all off, I don’t think they have ever heard of the word “ventilation” in my room and windows are considered as an unnecessary luxury I guess. So we’re now working on a new perfume in our room called “Eau de Voyageur” which has small hints of dirty clothes, sleep sweat and dirty bodies. Soon in a store near you!
I share my room with 3 people, all British. Two people of roughly my age and one older women which would’ve broken the world record for swearing the most if it existed. “Bloody hell, fuck this shit” have I heard in numerous variations for countless times. With the other two I get along well, although doing stuff together hasn’t really worked out. Going to a bar (he was sleeping) or going into the city (I couldn’t find him anymore) but for the rest everything is fine.
Auckland is a really beautiful city where you can find big differences in areas within walking distance. From luxurious private yachts to old parks and from shopping malls with the most expensive brands to hipster bars set up in a old warehouse. What I do notice is that there are a lot of homeless people and beggars, what makes the contrast between rich and poor sometimes quite big.
Auckland is build on and around sleeping volcanoes with Mount Eden being a good example of one of these. From below it just looks like a hill but as soon you get to the top you see beside a beautiful view of the city a enormous crater in the middle of the hill.
And that’s it for Auckland! I will take a bus tomorrow morning to go to Kawarau to work at a hostel, really looking forward to it!
